There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area of Dumfries and Galloway, all of which is on the doorstep of our hotel. Dumfries and Galloway has been described as Scotland in miniature and is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
This is the perfect place to enjoy a short break or a well deserved holiday. You will find Dumfries and Galloway to have no crowds and no traffic and generally to be a peaceful place where you will want to return for many more escapes from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
There are beautiful lochs and mountains, gardens, dark sky forests, castles to explore, historical towns including Castle Douglas – food town, fishing harbours, museums, art galleries containing work from many local artists, rolling hills, miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, many wildlife trails, deer parks and nature reserves.
There are many local castles to explore including Threave Castle that is a 5 minute drive from the Hotel, where you have to take a short boat ride to an island to visit the historical castle.
Drumlanrig castle is an impressive, grand castle with its own extensive gardens which is situated only 30 minutes drive away.
We are lucky to be located near to Galloway Forest Park, which has been awarded the title of a Dark Sky Forest, and is only one of five in the world to have this rare privilege. It is also Britain’s largest forest park. Since pollution is relatively low in Galloway the sky is so dark over the forest that thousands of stars can be seen at night and is a haven for aspiring astronomers everywhere. Dalbeatie forest is another local forest where many people go cycling.
There are plenty of beautiful gardens in the local area. Due to the relatively warm climate in Galloway, exotic and tropical plants can be found in some gardens. A local garden containing exotic plants is Logan Botanical Gardens which is a short drive away. Other local gardens include Threave Gardens and Broughton House Garden amongst many others.
There are miles of unspoilt sandy beaches on our doorstep at Sandyhills, Southerness and Rockcliffe. The coast is within a 20 minute drive of the hotel. The beautiful coastline is home to a range of wildlife and dramatic scenery.
Loch Ken is a large lake that is within a short drive of the hotel. Many people go fishing there. Impressive mountains can be found in Galloway Forest Park.
Carlingwalk loch is located in Castle Douglas, which is 5 minutes drive away from the hotel, and contains many types of birdlife, wildlife and marshland.
